Jess Xiaoyi Han's Photography
Jess Xiaoyi Han’s (b. 1997) practice explores her inner most feelings and experiences, visualised through the streams of string-like elements swimming across the canvas. Born in Dalian, China, she graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York with a degree in Illustration in 2019.
Han began her career creating portraiture using color pencil, markers, and water color before gradually shifting to abstract paintings during her education. Moving from China to the United States, Han’s works express the different phases of her life. Inspired by Kandinsky and Tanguy, Han believed abstraction best expressed her personal experiences, allowing her to spontaneously create works that are simultaneously calm yet chaotic.
Her works have been featured in solo shows such as ‘Something within the lines of love’ at the Ross + Kramer Gallery (New York, 2022) and ‘Moon & Alien Love / 是月亮嗎’ at Bridge Gallery (Sanya, China, 2021), as well as group shows including ‘Gembox’ (Latitude Gallery, New York, 2022), ‘The More the Merrier’ (The Himalayan Center, Shanghai, 2021), ‘Non-Existent Boundary’(Zero-Art Space, Zhengzhou, China, 2021), ‘Being and Nothingness’ (Tasso Gallery, Nanjing, 2021), ‘Glasshouse’ (Brooklyn, NY, 2020) and ‘Not Better but Equal’ (Miami, FL, 2017)
